Christian Alvad has been a professional musician and composer for over forty years now, and is acknowledged as one of Denmark’s best acoustic guitarists. His characteristic guitar style – melodic virtuosity with roots in folk, blues and gospel – is solidly planted in the Scandinavian tradition. His understated, humorous introductions and stories frame his music, and create a close bond with any audience. Christian Alvad has recorded and released music with Sherpas in the Himalayas, produced a TV series about Alaskan huskies, and composed and recorded film music for the Discovery Channel, National Geographic TV and many more. He has played hundreds of solo concerts both at home in Denmark and all over Europe. He has released 12 solo albums, and the last four albums have been nominated for Danish Music Awards.
"Alvad’s towering instrumental mastery and purity of tone ... " (Erik Andersen, Vejle Amts Folkeblad)
" ... so beautiful it almost hurts ... " (Copenhagen Daily Ekstra Bladet)
"Alvad’s music chimes with its own tone, so unmistakeably Danish. This is high art" (Boris Rabinovitch, Copenhagen Daily Politiken)
"Christian Alvad’s sublime solo guitar work ... is reminiscent of Ry Cooder and J.J.Cale" (Søren Kirkegaard, Rootszone)
Rod Sinclair, a Scotsman who has made his home in Denmark, has played solo and with groups including Kontraband, Sula, and the Rod Sinclair Band, travelling from Greenock to Greenland, Minnesota to Malawi, Ouagadougou to Valparaiso. His wry, understated introductions herald songs from Scotland and environs. Biannual tours of Denmark with Dick Gaughan, who played on Rod’s album Breaks & Bonds, marked a series of concert successes for the pair. Rod Sinclair performed at the first Tønder Festival, and still plays an active role there. Having made a score of folk recordings, both solo and with the bands, Rod Sinclair has also played banjo with heavy rock band Volbeat, making him one of the few banjo-players with triple platinum discs.
”A distinctive voice ... that just doesn’t let go” (Copenhagen Daily Information)
Anna Wirsén is a Swedish singer and guitarist with deep roots in the Scandinavian song tradition. Her songs are an elegant meld of poetic imagery and down-to-earth, every-day realism. Over and above her compositions, Anna’s repertoire includes songs by the famous Swedish songwriters Cornelis Wrejswiijk and Evert Taube, as well as contemporary Scandinavian songwriters. Mixing tenderness, dark humour, intensity, melancholy, romance, and just a dash of madness, Anna’s music leaves no listener untouched. Anna Wirséns’ album Vardagsballerina (Workday Ballerina) brings together top-flight musicians from Norway and Denmark, received fabulous reviews in the media, and has been awarded best folk album
(’Visealbum’) of the year by the Swedish recording industry.
"Blending absolute precision and loving, black humour, this album claims its place amongst the finest on the Swedish folk and roots song scene" (Obladoo)
"Recorded in Halden in Norway, this album might be retaliation for the Norwegians’ alleged murder of King Karl XII, in which case we can consider the case closed. This is a fantastic piece of work" (Lira)
”Worldly-wise, everyday philosophising over infidelity, rashness and other adventures, expressed so delicately and intensely: this is a personal declaration on a par with the best of Scandinavian songwriting" (Viser.no)
Take a Swedish singer-songwriter, a Danish guitar virtuoso and a Scots singer and multi-intrumentalist. You’ll be richly entertained by the result: Swedish lyrical ballads, world-class guitar instrumentals and Scots songs, all with a Scandinavian touch
The songs can be touchingly metaphorical, bitterly historical, laughably topical: an evening of song and music that translates traditional genres, drawing on the music and tales we share across the North Sea, on the beauty of stringed instruments of many styles, from Mediterranean, Baltic and TransAtlantic travels, and on the wealth of long careers in professional music.
Anna Wirsén, Christian Alvad and Rod Sinclair have all seen international success in their musical careers, and are now enjoying the combined fruits of the years. You are invited to share in that pleasure by attending an evening of music and song of highest carat.
